“Obstacles” to GUN CONTROL: Yahoo!

The title of a recently released Yahoo! article is “White House highlights ‘obstacles’ to taking action on guns” (Web-site/URL: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/white-house-highlights-obstacles-taking-action-guns-205115017–politics.html).

“As gun control advocates and even some gun rights SUPPORTERS  call for renewed focus on gun control, including a ban on assault weapons, following Friday’s (December 14, 2012) shooting in Newtown, Conn., the White House TAMPED DOWN suggestions Monday (December 17, 2012) that it will act quickly on the issue”. WHY?

“When asked at Monday’s (December 17, 2012) press briefing about the gun lobby’s influence on potential action, White House spokesman Jay Carney responded, WITHOUT specifically mentioning that lobby, “I think we all recognize that THIS IS A COMPLEX PROBLEM (obviously)  and THERE ARE OBSTACLES to taking action coming from a variety of places obviously. This is the latest EXCUSE. “What the president HOPES is that everyone STEPS BACK and looks at the situation that has to be addressed and thinks broadly and thoughtfully about how we can move FORWARD“. Once again, we have “hope” in addition to the “forward” vs. BACKWARD contrast.

“Carney suggested that the most Americans can immediately expect to see out of the White House will be an effort to engage the public “in the coming weeks”. There are TWO things to note here. First, WHAT PROPORTION is “most?” The figure should be >50%. On top of thisHOW MANY “weeks” are we talking about/looking at here?

“He added thatNO single piece of legislation, NO single action will FULLY address the problem” obviously. “So I DON’T have a specific agenda to announce to you today (December 17, 2012)” obviously. ANY SURPRISE THERE? “I would simply point you to what the president said last night (December 16, 2012) about moving FORWARD in the coming weeks”.

“But Carney later STRETCHED that timeline when asked about a POTENTIAL loss of momentum on the issue“. “IT’S HARD to think about 20 6- and 7-year-olds and what happened to them on Friday (December 14, 2012) and imagine that in a few weeks or few months that pain would not still be INCREDIBLY INTENSE” obviously.

“President Barack Obama spoke Sunday night (December 16, 2012) at a vigil in Newtown and pledged to engage the public following the shooting, but made no mention of legislation or specific actionobviouslybecause of PARTISAN POLITICS/BICKERING. “In the coming weeks, I’ll use whatever power this office holds to ENGAGE my fellow citizensfrom law enforcement to mental health professionals to parents and educatorsIN AN EFFORT AIMED AT preventing more tragedies like this“. Unfortunately, NOT ALL “efforts” are/will be successful and NOT ALL “engaging/engagements” are MEANINGFUL/FRUITFUL/PRODUCTIVE.

“Critics say the Obama administration HASN’T done enough to combat gun violence. Carney responded to that criticism Monday (December 17, 2012) by saying (that) the president has supported an assault weapons ban and that the administration has “taken steps” to improve background checks, “but as you heard the president say last night (December 16, 2012), we all need to DO MOREAgainwhat are these “steps” and where are THE SPECIFICS?

“When pressed by ABC News’ Jake Tapper to name specific legislation pushed by the administration, Carney cited “actions” on background checks and again stressed that MORE ACTION NEEDS TO BE TAKEN“. Again, this is all just more LIP SERVICE.

“Following the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., in July (2012), several Democratic lawmakers pushed legislation to outlaw the sale of high-capacity gun magazines. At the time, Sen. Dianne Feinstein  (D-Calif.) was one of the voices cautioning against wading into gun control during an election year. “It’s a BAD time to embrace a new subject“. This is the latest/another sign of POLITICIANS being DEFENSIVE, a fundamental characteristic of “Difficult People” (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI), given that Democrats lost 63 HOUSE seats in the 2010 mid-term elections and FEINSTEIN HERSELF was up for re-election (which she WON)Again, there are always/there will always be POLITICAL motives/undertones.

“On Sunday (December 16, 2012), Feinstein PLEDGED TO introduce next year (2013) a reinstatement of the assault weapons ban“. Speaking on NBC‘s “Meet the Press“, Feinstein said: “I think America is ready (?)” “ready” FOR WHATThey’re going to HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY (?) with this bill“. “have an opportunity” TO DO WHAT? Also, “pledges” are often BROKEN, especially by POLITICIANS.

“Connecticut Democratic Gov. Dan Malloy said at a press briefing Monday (December 17, 2012) in Hartford, Conn., that he supports hunters’ rights and gun owners’ rights, but “this stuff HAS GONE TOO FAR and is TOO EASY to own“.

“Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, an “A”-rated member of the NRA, told re porters at the state Capitol Monday (December 17, 2012)  that “the status quo IS NOT acceptable anymore” and called for restrictions on assault weapons, according to reports”.

“West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, another “A”-rated member of the NRA, on Monday (December 17, 2012) , saying on MSNBC‘s “Morning Joe“: “I don’t know anyone in the sporting or hunting arena that goes out with an assault rifleI don’t know anybody that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. I mean, these are things that NEED TO BE TALKED ABOUT“. Again, this is what POLITICIANS are all about: ALL “talk” and little if any ACTION.

“Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) declared on the floor Monday (December 17, 2012) that the “healing process” required Congress to “examine what can be done to PREVENT” similar tragedies in the future”. “We have NO GREATER RESPONSIBILITY than keeping our MOST VULNERABLE and MOST PRECIOUS resourceour childrensafe. And EVERY idea should be on the table as we discuss how best to do just thatIn the coming days and weeks, we will engage in A MEANINGFUL CONVERSATION (?) and THOUGHTFUL DEBATE (?) about how to change laws and culture that allow violence to grow“. WHAT CONSTITUTES “a meaningful conversation” and “a thoughtful debate?” Again this is open to INTERPRETATIONS (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).

Finally, “Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also spoke about the tragedy, which he said “STANDS OUT for its AWFULNESS“, but DID NOT hint at any legislative response“. “The murder of so many little children and the adults who tried to save them doesn’t just break our hearts, it SHATTERS THEM” obviously.

Of course, this latest round of talks about stronger/stricter/tighter gun control laws is in light of the HORRIFIC massacre at SANDY HOOK Elementary SchoolOf course, we know who is responsible for these “obstacles”: REPUBLICANS who are LIFETIME NRA MEMBERS. This should also remind us again, horrifically, of SARAH PALIN painting guns over former Rep. GABRIELLE GIFFORDS’ district as part of a “Target List” on January 8 2011 (Web-site/URL: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20027918-503544.html). Giffords, of course, was targeted in an attempted assassination on the same day (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabrielle_Giffords). We should reiterate, again, that Sarah Palin has NO political future because she just craves attention and the painting of guns over Giffords’ district on the same day she was shot and almost killed demonstrates the fact that Palin has CHARACTER/CONDUCT issues/MORAL deficiencies and THERE IS NO PLACE FOR SUCH A PERSON IN PUBLIC OFFICE.
