The title of a Fox News article released on December 10, 2012 is “Obama, (and) Boehner meet on fiscal crisis for first time in weeks” (Web-site/URL: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/12/10/obama-boehner-meet-on-fiscal-crisis-for-first-time-in-weeks/).
Was this meeting productive? “President Obama was heading to Detroit Monday afternoon (December 10, 2012) to continue campaigning for tax HIKES on top earners — a day after a face-to-face meeting with House Speaker John Boehner that offered slight hope (that) the two COULD BE making progress toward a deal“. Again “could be” IS NOT a guarantee.
“The president and the speaker met Sunday afternoon (December 9 2012) at the White House for the first time in weeks. It came after Boehner publicly CHIDED Obama on Friday (December 7, 2012) for the lack of progress to date, ACCUSING the president of having “WASTED another week”. “chided” and “accused” are the latest examples of “blaming and criticizing” (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-AJviZ8Itk).
According to “the statement released by each office”, “This afternoon (December 10, 2012), the President and Speaker Boehner met at the White House to discuss EFFORTS to resolve the fiscal cliff”. Are these “efforts” going anywhere? “We’re NOT reading out details of the conversation (obviously), but the lines of communication REMAIN OPEN (?)” ARE THEY? REALLY? OK EVEN IF “the lines of communication remain open”, will any PRODUCTIVE compromise be possible?
“Sen. Bob Corker, R–Tenn., became the latest Republican to OPEN the door to tax rate HIKES during an interview on “Fox News Sunday (December 9 2012)”. “There is a GROWING group of folks that are looking at this and realizing that we DON’T have a lot of cards as it relates to the TAX issue, before year-end (December 31, 2012). I mean, we have ONE house, (and) THAT’S IT“. So it’s NOT as if we have many options.
“Corker suggested that Republicans instead focus on extracting entitlement cuts as part of the debt-ceiling NEGOTIATIONS (?)” Again it’s NOT as if there’s much IF ANY “negotiating” going on between/amongst these POLITICIANS. “Republicans know that they have the debt ceiling that’s coming up right around the corner and the leverage is going to shift as soon as we GET BEYOND this issue“. The question of course is: CAN WE/IS IT POSSIBLE TO “get beyond this issue?” “The leverage is going to shift to OUR side, where HOPEFULLY, we’ll do THE SAME THING we did last time”. “hopefully” reinforces the fact that this is CORKER‘s EXPECTATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., the No. 3 Republican in the House, suggested Sunday (December 9, 2012) that the president’s itinerary has left Republicans to negotiate with THEMSELVES“. Speaking on “Meet the Press”, McCarthy said: “He’s (President Obama has) been to Pennsylvania. Tomorrow (December 11, 2012) he is going to Detroit. It’s now time to GOVERN. THE ELECTION IS OVER“.
Finally, “Democratic Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin countered that Obama “is (just) a phone call away and YOU KNOW IT“.
This is just the latest case of PARTISAN POLITICS and “We think they made us mad; they think we made them mad and here we go” (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
