The title of a recently released Yahoo! article is “Obama (and) GOP leaders LAY DOWN MARKERS on BUDGET DEAL” (Web-site/URL: http://news.yahoo.com/obama-gop-leaders-lay-down-markers-budget-deal-080338986.html). IS THERE ANY “deal?”
“Taking little time to celebrate (his re-election victory), President Barack Obama is setting out to leverage his re-election into legislative success in an upcoming SHOWDOWN with congressional Republicans over TAXES, DEFICITS and the impending “FISCAL CLIFF“. “showdown” suggests CONFRONTATION/the President is ready to BATTLE/FIGHT. “House Speaker John Boehner says Republicans are willing to consider some form of higher tax revenue as part of the solution — but ONLY “under the right conditions“. What are these “conditions?” Boehner seems ready to fight as well…AS USUAL.
“Obama adviser David Axelrod, (speaking to MSNBC), warned Republican leaders to take lessons from Tuesday’s (November 6, 2012) vote. The president won after pledging to RAISE taxes on American households earning more than $250,000 a year “and WAS RE-ELECTED in a SIGNIFICANT way. HOPEFULLY, people will read those results and read them as a vote for COOPERATION (?) and will COME TO THE (NEGOTIATING) TABLE. And obviously, everyone’s going to have to come WITH AN OPEN MIND to these discussions. But if the attitude is that nothing happened on Tuesday (November 6, 2012), (then) THAT WOULD BE UNFORTUNATE“. Again there are TWO things to note here. First, there certainly ISN’T much “cooperation” or “negotiating”/negotiation going on amongst/between POLITICIANS these days. Secondly, as far “NOTHING happened” is concerned, yes, “NOTHING happened”. THE STATUS QUO is still in place in Washington DC/on Capitol Hill. CONGRESS IS STILL DIVIDED, but President Obama was re-elected because he is the United States best hope for reaching CONSENSUS. Axelrod should be given a new title: SENIOR CAMPAIGNER, with CHIEF Campaigner being reserved for First Lady MICHELLE OBAMA.
“He noted that conservative Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock in Indiana DISMISSED the value of COMPROMISE and instead said Democrats should join the GOP”. Some did, like BLANCHE LINCOLN by voting for the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act, but AGAINST the Healthcare Education & Reconciliation Act of 2010 (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blanche_Lincoln). “And I note that he’s NOT on his way to the United States Senate” obviously, especially after he (Mourdock) said that “rape was something that GOD INTENDED to happen” (Web-site/URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Mourdock). The only people who believe in that theory are the people who are MORE extreme than people like CUI XILINGwho only has THREE publications in 10 years because she spent 8 years doing a PhD that should have taken 3-5 years because she had TWO kids in 3.5 years solely because of PARENTAL PRESSURE (Web-site/URL: http://www.hksyu.edu/ba/CuiXiling.html). This is outrageous because it is DEMEANING to women. It’s as if Mourdock is saying that women ARE SUPPOSED TO BE WEAK and IT’S PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE to TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM. OK, the idea that women should only stay at home is a legitimate ULTRA-conservative idea/concept, but the idea that GOD INTENDED for RAPE to occur is DISGUSTING.
“Vice President Joe Biden, flying to his home in Delaware from Chicago, told reporters aboard Air Force Two that the White House was “REALLY ANXIOUS” to get moving on the problem” of THE LACK OF A BUDGET. Unfortunately, of course, Republicans DON’T feel the same way. “He said he’d been making a lot of calls and “people know WE’VE GOT TO GET DOWN TO WORK and I THINK (that) they’re (Republicans are) ready to move“. This is the DEMOCRATIC INTERPRETATION (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). Republicans certainly DON’T seem “ready to move”. “He didn’t identify whom he had spoken with, but predicted the “fever will break” on past LEGISLATIVE GRIDLOCK after some SOUL-SEARCHING by Republicans”. Again, there are TWO things to note here. First “legislative gridlock” is here to stay after a REPUBLICAN House and a DEMOCRATIC Senate were chosen again. Secondly, this is a critical question: how will Republicans respond after this presidential election debacle? Will they become more conciliatory or more HARDENED/RIGID/IDEALISTIC? WILL THEY engage in “soul-searching” after LOSING an election that they were EXPECTED to win?
“The White House held out this week’s election results as a mandate from voters for GREATER COOPERATION between the White House and Congress (?)” Again this DOES NOT seem to be happening. “At the same time, it reiterated Obama’s top priorities: cutting taxes for MIDDLE-CLASS families and small businesses, CREATING JOBS and cutting the deficit “in a BALANCED (?) way” — through a combination of tax increases on WEALTHIER Americans and spending cuts“. Well, we know that “tax increases on wealthier Americans” WILL NOT sit well with the GOP. Also, what is “balanced?” What is “balanced” for DEMOCRATS WON’T be “balanced” for REPUBLICANS and vice versa, so again, this open to INTERPRETATIONS (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., channeled Obama in calling for a quick (?) solution to the fiscal showdown and saying that asking “THE RICHEST of the rich” to pay MORE SHOULD BE part of the equation“, but of course, we know that the GOP WON’T agree to that. Secondly, when was the last time any POLITICIAN did things “quickly?” NEVER. “He added that he’d “do everything within my power to be as CONCILIATORY (?) as possible” but added, “I want everyone to also understand (that) YOU CAN’T PUSH US AROUND“, implying, of course, that the “force and pain technique” will be used (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). “Waiting for a month, six weeks (or) six months, that’s NOT going to solve the problem” obviously. “We know what needs to be done. And so I think that we should just ROLL UP OUR SLEEVES and GET IT DONE“. NOT IF REPUBLICANS HAVE THEIR WAY.
“Former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle said the postelection congressional session offers a good chance to RESET THE DYNAMICS between the White House and congressional Republicans IN SEARCH OF compromise“. WILL THEY EVER FIND this “compromise?” “I think there’s THE URGENCY OF THE MATTER that probably goes beyond anything we’ve seen to date“. “THE URGENCY of the repercussions of DRIVING OFF THE CLIFF ARE SO GRAVE that I CAN’T IMAGINE THAT FAILURE IS AN OPTION“. Do THE CURRENT POLITICIANS feel this “urgency?”
“Both Biden and Reid pointed to election exit poll results showing that most Americans SUPPORT HIGHER taxes on THE WEALTHY“.
“Biden said there was “a clear sort of MANDATE (?) about people coming much closer to OUR (i.e. the DEMOCRATIC) view about how to deal with tax policy“, adding that “there’s all kinds of POTENTIAL to be able to reach a RATIONAL, (and) PRINCIPLED COMPROMISE“, again IF BOTH Democrats and Republicans put partisan differences aside but unfortunately that DOES NOT seem to be happening right now. In fact we wonder IF it will EVER happen.
“Boehner, for his part, said that for Obama to get support for new revenues “the president MUSTbe willing to REDUCE SPENDING and shore up the entitlement programs that are the primary drivers of our debt”. Of course “reduce spending” is the BIG GOP priority. “We AREN’T seeking to impose our will on the president”. REALLY? This is the latest JOHN BOEHNER FREAK SHOW. “We’re (simply) asking him to make good on his ‘BALANCED‘ approach“. Well, earlier we said that Democrats AREN’T COMPLETELY “balanced” and WE CAN SAY THE SAME THING ABOUT THE GOP.
So, once again, TH E BATTLE LINES HAVE BEEN DRAWN.
