LONDON Olympics Begin: Al-Jazeera

The title of an Al-Jazeera article released on July 28, 2012 is “London Olympics declared open with GRAND (?) show” (Web-site/URL: http://www.aljazeera.com/sport/olympics/2012/07/201272719731236470.html). WAS IT “grand?” It was simple.

“Queen Elizabeth II officially opens London 2012 Games after SPECTACULAR (?) opening ceremony showcasing BEST OF Britain”For many foreigners“best of Britain” conjures up images of DOUBLE DECKER BUSES. With the Olympics returning to EUROPE for the first time in EIGHT years (the most recent Olympics took place in ATHENS in 2004)again, there was an emphasis on SIMPLICITY in sharp contrast with the 2008 BEIJING Olympics, which was mostly about POMP and CIRCUMSTANCE.

According to Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire”), “This IS NOT specific to A COUNTRY; this is across ALL countries and the fallen from ALL countries are celebrated and remembered“.

“Millions of Britons packed pubs and gathered with friends and relatives for the grand opening of the greatest show sports on earth, while thousands of excited fans gathered at big screens at London’s Hyde Park and other outdoor locations across the capital”.

Al Jazeera‘s Lee Wellings, reporting from one such event in Blackheath, south London, described a “CARNIVAL atmosphere“.

“He said people had smiles on their faces and that concerns over costs of the event appeared to have faded away, being replaced with a “SENSE OF EXCITEMENT and A SENSE OF PRIDE of being British”“carnival”“excitement” and “pride” are the first POSITIVE words we’ve seen/read/heard in a long time.

“Boris Johnson, mayor of London, the only city to host the Summer Games THREE times, said: “This is a VERY, VERY TENSE moment, but SO FAR, I’m CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC. I’m just worried that I HAVEN’T got enough to worry about AT THE MOMENT. Notice “at the moment”. “I haven’t got enough to worry about” should be a GOOD thing right? Well, POLITICIANS are always looking for controversy. As we know, THINGS COULD QUICKLY CHANGE from one “moment” to the next.

“Counter-terrorism chiefs have PLAYED DOWN fears of a major attack on the Games and British Prime Minister David Cameron said that A SAFE AND SECURE OLYMPIC GAMES WAS HIS PRIORITY. “This is THE BIGGEST security operation in our peacetime history and WE ARE LEAVING NOTHING TO CHANCE“. Cameron is CONSERVATIVE and as we know, conservatives THINK that they have an advantage when it comes to “security” issues. At least, this is what they BELIEVE and WANT US TO BELIEVE(Web-site/URL:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).

Al Jazeera‘s Peter Sharp, reporting from Olympic Park in London, said that security would remain a high priority until the end of the games and that there was visible police presence on the ground, backed up on the ground by thousands of members of (the) armed forces”. “On the Thames, there’s a vessel there that houses the strike forces and commando units that can be called uponWe also know that anti-missile defenses (and) rockets have been put on houses around the site of the stadium”.

Finally, “A series of doping scandals have tarnished the Games’ image in the buildup, with at least 11 athletes banned so far, and Greek triple jumper Paraskevi Papachristou became the Olympics’ first “twitter VICTIM (?)” when she was withdrawn from the team over TWEETED COMMENTS DEEMED RACIST. Papachristou allegedly tweeted derogatory comments about AFRICANS(Web-site/URL: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/london-olympics/greek-jumper-kicked-out-for-racism/story-fn9dheyx-1226435261881). THIS IS DISGRACEFUL, especially in the 21st century.
We’re only FOUR days into the 2012 Summer Games and there are already TWO scandals brewing.

Again, it seems like NOTHING IS WITHOUT CONTROVERSY THESE DAYS.
