The title of a recently released Yahoo! article is “ALARMING assaults on women in Egypt’s Tahrir (Square)” (Web-site/URL: http://news.yahoo.com/alarming-assaults-women-egypts-tahrir-002456490.html). These vicious “assaults” ARE INDEED “alarming”.
According to Abdel-Fatah Mahmoud, “a 22-year-old engineering student, who met Wednesday (June 6, 2012) with friends to organize patrols of the square IN AN EFFORT TO deter attacks against women“, “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. IT HAS GONE OVERBOARD. NO MATTER WHAT IS BEHIND THIS, IT IS UNACCEPTABLE (certainly). IT SHOULDN’T be happening on our streets let alone Tahrir”. These kinds of attacks “SHOULDN’T be happening” ANYWHERE. Let’s also note “in an effort to deter” because OLD HABITS ARE HARD/PEOPLE ARE RESISTANT TO CHANGE.
According to Human Rights Watch researcher Heba Morayef, “IF YOU KNOW YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH sexual harassment and assault, THEN THERE IS AN OVERALL IMPUNITY“. In other words, in many cases, MEN THINK THEY CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT.
Finally, according to Mona Seif, “a well-known activist who has been trying to promote awareness about the problem (of women being VICIOUSLY attacked/assaulted),”I think IT IS GETTING WORSE because PEOPLE DON’T WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT IS HAPPENING OR DO SOMETHING TO REDUCE IT. It is our job to put an end to it, at least in Tahrir”. Again, Tahrir Square continues to be a symbol of Egyptians’ struggle for freedom and democracy. Also “people don’t want to acknowledge it is happening or do something about it” is another example of what CBS‘ LARA LOGAN called/described as “the code of silence” (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO12X1nhzzk).
This is a DISGRACEFUL attack against women’s DIGNITY. Let’s also note that this also applies to CHINESE women because a lot of these women, especially the SUPER-traditional ones, demand that the men they choose are TALLER and RICHER than they are, while THEY DON’T PLAN TO GIVE ANYTHING IN RETURN. THIS IS THE PERFECT RECIPE FOR ABUSE situation
