2-year-old Bird Flu Patient in HK (Chapter 2): China Daily

The title of a China Daily article released on June 5, 2012 is ” Boy’s case ISOLATED, bird flu outbreak UNLIKELY(Web-site/URL: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2012-06/05/content_15473422.htm?bsh_bid=98568043). UNLIKELY?” Is this true?

ALL of the contacts of a 2-year-old boy who tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland were either asymptomatic (showing no symptoms) or tested NEGATIVE for bird flu, authorities of the special administrative region and Guangdong province said, suggesting that the chance of an outbreak was SLIMWe can only HOPE that this is true/the case.

“York Chow Yat-ngok, secretary for food and health, assured the public that it was an “isolated” case and (that) THE CITY IS WELL-GUARDED against ALL types of infectious diseases” HOPEFULLY. Again, we have to be careful about over-generalizing whenever we see words such as “ALL, EVERY, NONE or NEVER. “We feel that THERE IS NO NEED for panic among Hong Kong residents” again HOPEFULLY. “All in all, I would only advise the public to MAINTAIN A GOOD LEVEL OF PERSONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENEobviously.

Finally, He Jianfeng, “director of the Epidemic Studies Institute of the Guangdong Disease Control and Prevention Center”, finished off: “VIGILANCE HAS BEEN maintained against a human avian flu epidemic in Guangdong. NO sample has tested positive so far this year (2012). The boy infected with avian flu is apparently an ISOLATED case” again HOPEFULLY.

So, both this article and a Yahoo! article entitled “Hong Kong sees first human bird flu case in 18 months” (Web-site/URL: http://news.yahoo.com/hong-kong-sees-first-human-bird-flu-case-142655367.html) suggest that this case is an “ISOLATED” case. However, the Yahoo! article EXPLICITLY STATES that “Hong Kong officials said the Chinese boy was in serious condition after testing positive for the deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza and the city had raised the bird flu alert level to “SERIOUS” so HONGKONGERS WHO ARE EITHER ALREADY IN MAINLAND CHINA OR PLANNING TO GO THERE IN THE NEAR FUTURE SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS AND TAKE ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS.
