The title of a Yahoo! article released on June 3, 2012 is “Police: Shots fired at Canada mall, 1 dead” (Web-site/URL: http://news.yahoo.com/police-shots-fired-canada-mall-1-dead-013026569.html).
“A gunman fired shots in a crowded food court in one of Canada’s busiest malls Saturday (June 2, 2012) killing a man and injuring seven others, police said”.
“Police Chief Bill Blair said the shooting at Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto TARGETED one individual and there were a number of innocent bystanders“ who surely were CAUGHT UP in the violence/craziness/mayhem/madness/chaos and we know how problematic that is. “Police constable Victor Kwong said two people were in CRITICAL condition after being shot at the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto, including a 13-year old boy. The 25-year-old man who was killed died at the scene, he said”.
“Kwong said six people were shot in all, INCLUDING the deceased. Two people were TRAMPLED ON and pushed, including a pregnant woman who went into labor after she was pushed, he said”. “trampled on” suggests that people were FRANTICALLY trying to scramble/get to safety and this is GRUESOME.
“Blair said (that) investigators have a description of the suspect”. “A lot of innocent people were hurt and a lot of innocent people were put at risk” obviously. “WE WILL BE RELENTLESS in our pursuit of the individual“. Somehow we need to balance this with the assumption that people are INNOCENT until proven GUILTY and not the other way round like in CHINA where people are GUILTY until proven INNOCENT.
“Toronto Blue Jays baseball player Brett Lawrie was in the mall when the shooting took place and was one of the first to take to Twitter to break the news”. “Pretty sure someone just let off a round (of) bullets in eaton center mall … WOW just SPRINTED out of the mall … through traffic. People SPRINTING up the stairs right from where we just were … WOW, WOW, WOW. RATTLED right now“. THIS IS EXPECTED (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
According to 21-year-old Hannah Stewart, a shopper, “All of a sudden, A HERD OF people were just RUNNING towards us, a MASSIVE crowd of people SCREAMING, RUNNING (and) FREAKING OUT“. Again, NO SURPRISE THERE. BULLETS WERE FLYING. “We saw this girl, SITTING ON THE GROUND and SHE HAD BLOOD ON HER TOES“.
“Another victim (Nicholas) said HE WAS HIT THE LEG by a stray bullet“. “In an interview on CP24 television as he left the hospital”, Nicholas (who declined to give his last name), said: “We had just gone shopping. We heard shots and hit the ground. A couple of seconds later, I got hit. I actually ran. It was A SURVIVAL INSTINCT. I’m tired, but (otherwise), I’m pretty good“. How about SHAKEN? “He said he DIDN’T see the shooter“. “NOTHING (?) surprises me, but OUT IN THE OPEN? COME ON“. THIS is a statement of “surprise”.
“Tonya MAHMOOD said her sister was shot in the leg but is DOING BETTER“. “She told CP24 outside the hospital”, “WE’RE JUST WAITING to see IF she’ll need surgery“. Again, “if” in this case should make everyone APPREHENSIVE. “She’s one of the nicest persons in the whole world. SHE WAS JUST SHOPPING WITH HER FRIENDS AND SHE GOT SHOT. IT’S JUST HEARTBREAKING. WE’RE SO LUCKY. We’re thanking God. My parents are THANKING (?) God that it was the leg. IT COULD HAVE BEEN ANYWHERE ELSE“, as if getting shot in the leg ISN’T serious enough? Surely there will be or there already has been MASSIVE BLOOD LOSS. Let’s also note the name MAHMOOD – an ARAB name. As we know there are tensions between Arabs and the West.
“Blair called the Eaton Centre an ICONIC landmark in Toronto, Canada’s largest city”, making it vulnerable to attacks. “ANY place for discharging a firearm in Toronto is DANGEROUS“ obviously. PEOPLE GET KILLED by “firearms”. “In the food court of the Eaton Centre on a Saturday evening, it’s NOT ONLY dangerous, it’s OUTRAGEOUS. “I believe EVERY Torontonian is SHOCKED and APPALLED by this crime.” This is yet another example of a POLITICIAN PUTTING ON A FREAK SHOW. “it’s outrageous” and “EVERY Torontonian is shocked and outraged by this crime. OK. WHAT WILL BLAIR DO ABOUT THIS/TO REMEDY THIS SITUATION? NOTHING AS USUAL.
“In 2005, a 15-year-old girl was killed during the Christmas holiday just north of the mall in a shooting that shocked the city during a year of RECORD gun deaths in Toronto. In that case, Toronto teen Jane Creba was shopping with family on busy Yonge Street when she was CAUGHT IN THE CROSSFIRE of a shootout between rival gangs“. Again we are reminded of how CHAOTIC and DANGEROUS it can be when we are “caught in the crossfire” of something that we weren’t involved in.
Blair went on: “Today (June 3, 2012) harkens back to THAT TERRIBLE MOMENT. I am VERY SADLY reminded of that. That was one of the most TRAGIC and SHOCKING events that ever took place in Toronto”.
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said: “IT’S ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE” obviously.
Finally, “Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty called it a case of “SENSELESS, TRAGIC violence” and expressed his condolences to the victims and their families”.
We need to be aware/take note of this because malls are ‘soft’ targets, meaning that people often let their guard down, making it MUCH easier for a killer or a terrorist to strike because people often walk into and out of these places COMPLETELY unsuspecting. We also need to note that the NRA and other gun rights’ advocates/activists have now made/are now making their presence felt NORTH OF THE BORDER.
