SYRIA Frees TURKISH Journalists: Al-Jazeera

The title of an Al-Jazeera article released on May 12, 2012 is “Turkish journalists released by Syria” (Web-site/URL: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2012/05/201251115138320211.html).

“Two journalists detained in Syria and held for two months are on their way home after IRANIAN mediation. THIS IS VERY TROUBLING because IRAN and SYRIA are on THE SAME side – AGAINST freedom. Seriously, does IRAN know how to “mediate?”

“Two Turkish journalists who were detained for two months in Syria arrived in TEHRAN (?) following mediation by IRAN (?), the Turkish foreign minister has announced”. This is SCARY.

“Hamit Coskun, a cameraman, and reporter Adem Ozkose, of the newspaper Milat, entered Syria in early March (2012) to film a documentary on the crackdown on dissent in the country”. Of courseas we knowin undemocratic countries (e.g. IRAN, SYRIA, NORTH KOREA and CHINA)“dissent” IS NOT ALLOWED and could result in someone being EXECUTED.

“Following the journalists’ arrival in the Iranian capital (TEHRAN) on Saturday (May 12, 2012), Ozkose said: “We are here with IHH [ISTANBUL-based Humanitarian Relief Foundation] officials. Hamit is also DOING WELL. (Having said that, however), WE ARE WAITING FOR THE DAY (when) we will return to Turkey. We are thankful for everyone who has been praying for us. HOPEFULLY, we will return home WITH PRAYERS. So, Cozkun’s and Ozkose’s “return to Turkey” ARE NOT guaranteed. This is a VERY DELICATE/PRECARIOUS situation.

Finally, “Last month (April 2012), Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish prime minister, accused the Damascus government of jailing the journalists”. This is what dictators do: ARBITRARY ARRESTS. “Right now, two Turkish journalists are still in the hands of the Syrians, practically in a position of prisoners of war (POWs)”. “Erdogan demanded that Syriarespond to this IMMEDIATELY. Of course, this WON’T happen. When was the last time any POLITICIAN did anything “immediately?”

This only adds to the uncertainty for journalists, with this story coming hot on the heels of Al Jazeera‘s MELISSA CHAN being expelled from CHINA (Web-site/URL: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2012/05/201251115138320211.html) and uncertainty/concern about journalists is certainly something that we DON’T need any more ofHell, we DON’T need any more uncertainty, OF ANY KIND.
