SYRIA ACCEPTS UN Plan? Al-Arabiya

The title of an Al-Arabiya article released on March 27, 2012 is “U.S. says Syria’s ACCEPTANCE (?) of U.N. plan (an) ‘important step’” (Web-site/URL: http://english.alarabiya.net/articles/2012/03/27/203488.html).

Has SYRIA REALLY/TRULY accepted the UN plan? “The United States on Tuesday (March 27, 2012) praised as an “important stepSyria’s reported acceptance of a peace plan by U.N. envoy Kofi Annan”. Of course, at least part of this “reported acceptance” was “reported” by STATE MEDIA (SANA)which, again, as we know, is an unreliable PROPAGANDA MACHINE.

“Meanwhile, opposition groups agreed to form a “national pact” and united to form an alternative to President Bashar al-Assad”Again, these “opposition groups” are ANYTHING BUT “united”
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, “We certainly view the fact that Kofi Annan reports that he’s had a POSITIVE response as AN important step”. This is a statement of CAUTIOUS optimism. “But as with all things with the Assad REGIME, the proof will be in THE ACTUAL ACTION that he takes”. If history is any reminder /indicator, BASHAR AL-ASSAD is likely to “take” NO “action” AT ALL to end the bloodshed that has officially been going on for over a year now, but surely has been going on for MUCH longer. Again, as we’ve seen in EGYPT and LIBYA, “regimes” DON’T give in/make concessions or crumble easily. “We will be looking for him to take IMMEDIATE action to begin implementing Annan’s proposals, starting with SILENCING HIS GUNS and allowing humanitarian aid to go in”. Well, 15 people were killed on Tuesday (March 27, 2012), so it’s clear that Assad still HAS NOT “silenced his guns” (Web-site/URL: http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jIueJvMy9WFBULcFkVGv_GDvsCbA?docId=CNG.0bf844563113c4f0b33b7074e5035e1d.671).

“Meanwhile, Syrian opposition groups meeting in Istanbul agreed on to form a “national pact” for POST-Assad Syria, Bassam Jaara, a member of the Syrian National Council (SNC) told Al-Arabiya“. There will ultimately be a “POST-Assad Syria”, but HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET THERE/ACHIEVE THIS? This uprising has been going on for over a year now and BASHAR AL-ASSAD‘s assault on activists/dissidents/political opponents is showing NO SIGNS  of letting up/easing.

“Jaara said an overhaul of the Syrian National Council (SNC) WOULD BE DONE in three weeks and that it would include more opposition figures”. “would be done in three weeks?” When was the last time any POLITICIAN got something done before or right at deadlines?

“Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting dominated by THE INTERNAL DIVISIONS, SNC spokeswoman Basma Kodmani voiced support for the peace and ceasefire plan drawn up by U.N. and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan, SO LONG AS it led to Assad’s removal“. “This is for us a position that CANNOT CHANGE because thousands of Syrians have died for it“. THIS IS LEGIT.

“In an opening address to the meeting, Turkish foreign ministry official Halit Celik said THERE WAS NO ALTERNATIVE to Assad’s regime going and he extended support to the SNC as a platform for different STRANDS of the opposition”.”strands”, again, indicates that the opposition is SPLINTERED/NOT united.

“Shortly afterwards, however, Haitham al-Maleh, a venerable opposition figure who was jailed by both Assad and his father (HAFEZ al-Assad) walked out of the hall after SNC President Burhan Ghalioun set out an action plan that called for GREATER UNITY“. Again, there isn’t even “unity” in THE UNITED STATES, so to expect “unity” in SYRIA, where there is a dictatorshipwould be unrealistic. “I want to see the council act DEMOCRATICALLYobviously. “Until now, they are acting like the (ruling) BAATH Party” and that is obviously a VERY BAD place to be.

According to Abdulhakim Basar, of the Kurdish National Council, “If we DON’T reach an agreement now, THESE ISSUES WILL BE MORE COMPLICATED after the regime” and life is already “complicated” enough. “Maybe WE ARE AFRAID of an INTERNAL war between the Syrian factions, so we prefer to reach an agreement NOW to avoid this“, which makes perfect sense. Syria has to be for ALL Syrians WITHOUT DISCRIMINATION”. This is great IDEOLOGY, but DOES ANYONE SEE THIS HAPPENING?

“Ghalioun also advocated the adoption of a “national oath”, committing all the opposition to building a DEMOCRATIC state, without any agenda for REVENGE and to seek reconciliation ONCE Assad IS REMOVED“. Again“revenge” is an “Ambassador of Doom” (Web-site/URL:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h7cmuRLwME). As far as “once Assad is removed” is concerned, again, unfortunately, this seems to be A LONG WAY OFF. Other dictators (BEN ALI in TUNISIA, MUBARAK in EGYPT and GADHAFI in LIBYA) toppled like dominoes.

Finally, according to “a diplomat observing the meeting”, “The executive council will have to do something to show (that) IT IS LISTENING TO PEOPLE”. POLITICIANS NOT “listening to people” has been, is and will continue to be A CHRONIC ISSUE/PROBLEM. Also, “The executive council” sounds like “The Executive Council” in HONG KONG, which, ironically, also DOESN’T “listen to people” because these people are hand-picked by the Chief Executive and the incoming Chief Executive (CE), LEUNG CHUN-YING, is another CHINA fanatic. “There is a feeling IT IS NOT TRANSPARENT or DEMOCRATIC enough”. Again, unfortunately, we can say this about MANY societies these days

So, Syria REMAINS SPLINTERED and we should be worried/concerned that THESE TENSIONS COULD BOIL OVER AT ANY TIME. Also, it is highly UNLIKELY that SYRIA has accepted the UN plan for peace, because people like BASHAR AL-ASSAD, BASHAR Jafaari and JIHAD MAKDISSI surely WON’T listen to anyone from the INTERNATIONAL community.
