The title of a Yahoo! article released on March 25, 2012 is “Tough, PRO-BEIJING Leung to lead WARY Hong Kong” (Web-site/URL: http://news.yahoo.com/tough-pro-beijing-leung-lead-wary-hong-kong-075954195.html).
“Hong Kong picked a Beijing loyalist and BUSINESSMAN, Leung Chun-ying, as its next leader on Sunday (March 25, 2012) following a SCANDAL-RIDDEN election race that sparked protests and INTENSIFIED PUBLIC FRUSTRATION about a lack of democracy“. “businessman” immediately reminds us of SPECIAL INTERESTS and we certainly DON’T need any more “scandals” or “frustration”.
“Leung, 57, is a SELF-MADE surveyor, former senior Hong Kong government adviser and known as a suave and at times RUTHLESS, political operator WITH CLOSE TIES TO China’s Communist party”. Does this mean then, that LEUNG IS a Communist? This will surely set the blogosphere on fire. Also, notice “self-made”. Again, this has SPECIAL INTERESTS written all over it and it also should remind us of GAO WEI and CUI XILING again, because these two got into the Chinese University of Hong Kong based on a relationship – the “future wife” GATE (Web-site/URL: http://www.se.cuhk.edu.hk/~wgao/publication/master-thesis.pdf). In order to get into university, whether for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, people need to rely on their TALENT and university admissions officials should look at TALENT alone instead of “close ties” or FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS. OK, if we’re more flexible, family relationships can be a factor in whether someone gets into a certain school, university or job, but it SHOULD NOT be THE ONLY/MAIN/DOMINANT factor. Using the same thought process, the Hong Kong Chief Executive should be ACCEPTABLE to China only while maintaining the ability to DISAGREE with the Chinese central government when appropriate. NO GOVERNMENT IS PERFECT.
“A HIGH-FLYING member of Hong Kong’s ELITE, Leung forged a business career in property surveying before playing an important mediating role between China and Britain during negotiations leading up to the city’s handover from British to Chinese rule in 1997″. “A high-flying…elite” is more evidence that Leung is OUT OF TOUCH with mainstream Hong Kong society.
“Dubbed the “WOLF” for what some describe as his steely edge, the tall, trim Leung has been labeled A SECRET COMMUNIST PARTY cadre — an accusation he denies — by some of (the) staunchly capitalist Hong Kong media and politicians”. “wolf” signifies/suggests/implies EXTREME AGGRESSION, which carries VERY NEGATIVE implications and “a secret COMMUNIST PARTY cadre” is obviously EXTREMELY PROBLEMATIC/DEEPLY TROUBLING.
“But Leung, in his first public comments following his victory, sought to put such talk to rest”. “I AM NOT a member of the Communist Party. I AM NOT a so-called underground member of the Communist Party. In fact, I’M NOT a member and have not been a member of any political party anywhere in the world“. The repetition of “I’m not” makes this the latest UNPROVEN ASSERTION.
“Many are APPREHENSIVE about his image as a HARDLINER” and JUSTIFIABLY SO.
According to political scientist Dixon Sing, “The situation will be VERY TOUGH. Many people DO NOT like his top-down management style and his deviation from the core values of Hong Kong”. “top-down management style” implies that Leung thinks he is SUPERIOR to others, which, of course, is a fundamental characteristic of “Difficult People” (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). “He has been extremely POLITICALLY CONSERVATIVE and HARDLINE“, two more VERY NEGATIVE phrases/descriptions/characteristics.
“He campaigned on a “ONE HEART, ONE VISION” populist agenda, pledging LAND FOR CHEAPER PUBLIC HOUSING and GREATER WELFARE“. This sounds REALLY good, but WILL Leung actually DO all this?
Finally, on Sunday (March 25, 2012), Leung said: “To the seven million people, I SOLEMNLY PLEDGE that after I take office, the freedoms and rights that they enjoy WILL BE MAINTAINED under my administration”. DONALD TSANG also promised this in 2005 after taking over from the disgraced TUNG CHEE-HWA (who acted like he was COMPLETELY inept), but it wasn’t long after the TSANG administration that Tsang became a CHINA FREAK.
So, LEUNG is considered “tough” and “pro-China”, which makes him JUST A CONTINUATION OF DONALD TSANG. Let’s just consider what Tsang did during consideration of his 2005 political reform proposal. “Tsang indicated he will not consider any proposals which are in conflict with the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress’ veto of universal suffrage in April (2005)”. At that point, Tsang acted like a TYRANT/DICTATOR (almost like the SYRIAN dictator BASHAR AL-ASSAD), which is exactly what Hong Kong DOESN’T need. OK we’ve said this about then Sen. OBAMA campaigning Sen. MCCAIN back in 2008 – we need REFORMERS and NOT someone who will simply continue implementing DEEPLY UNPOPULAR policies. Hong Kong has already had a STAUNCHLY “pro-Beijing” person for 7+ years and many of his most important policies are DEEPLY unpopular
