The title of a recently released Al-Jazeera article is “Syria detainees face ‘ systematic torture‘” (Web-site/URL: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2012/03/201231472520855269.html).
“The rights group (Amnesty International) said on Wednesday (March 14, 2012) that those caught up in the government’s massive wave of arrests had been “thrust into a NIGHTMARISH world of SYSTEMIC TORTURE. The testimony presented in this report, taken in the context of other human rights violations committed against civilians in Syria, is yet further evidence that TORTURE and other ill-treatment in Syria form part of a WIDESPREAD and SYSTEMATIC attack against the civilian population, carried out IN AN ORGANIZED MANNER and as part of state policy and therefore amount to CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY. In almost all cases, the detainees are held in incommunicado (deprived of any communication with others) detention, often for lengthy periods, with NO access to visits from their families or lawyers in conditions which all too often amount to ENFORCED DISAPPEARANCE“. “enforced” is the latest example of the “force and pain technique” (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI). This sounds like what often happens in CHINA: authorities can take a dissident away/abduct them WITHOUT notifying the dissident’s friends and family. “The torture appeared intended to PUNISH, to intimidate, to COERCE “confessions” and to “TERRIFY its victims into silence“. “punish”, “coerce” and “terrify” all imply that the “force and pain technique” has been used (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgnAY_eXYbI).
“Independent UN investigators led by Paulo Pinheiro said last month (February, 2012) that Syrian forces had committed crimes against humanity including murder and torture on orders from the “HIGHEST LEVEL” of Assad’s government” including ASSAD HIMSELF.
“A spokesman for Annan, who met Assad in Damascus over the weekend, said that the envoy had received a response from the Syrian president over what Annan had called “CONCRETE PROPOSALS” to halt the violence”. What are these “proposals?” This spokesman, Ahmad Fawzi, released the following “brief statement” from Annan’s office in Geneva: “The Joint Special Envoy (JSE) for Syria, Kofi Annan, has now received a response from the Syrian authorities. The JSE HAS QUESTIONS and is SEEKING ANSWERS“, STILL “seeking answers” that Bashar al-Assad continues to be EXTREMELY unwilling to give. “But given the GRAVE and TRAGIC situation on the ground, everyone must realize that time is of the essence” obviously. “As he (Annan) said in the region (Syria), this crisis CANNOT be allowed to drag on“. What can ANYONE do about this? Until we can satisfactorily answer that question, “this crisis cannot be allowed to drag on” is simply more LIP SERVICE.
Finally, Haitham al-Maleh, “one of two (opposition figures) who resigned (from the SNC)”, finished off: “I have resigned from the SNC because THERE IS A LOT OF CHAOS IN THE GROUP and NOT A LOT OF CLARITY over what they can accomplish right now“. This has been the case SINCE THE BEGINNING of the uprising to oust Assad. “We HAVE NOT gotten very far in working to ARMING THE REBELS“. This idea has been mentioned on numerous occasions, but unfortunately for the rebels, western nations are neither able nor willing to do this.
