The title of a Yahoo! article released on February 29, 2012 is “Maine GOP Sen. Snowe WON’T seek re-election” (Web-site/URL: http://news.yahoo.com/maine-gop-sen-snowe-wont-seek-election-235029802.html).
“Sometimes criticized as a RINO — short for Republican in Name Only — Snowe continued to express as she prepared to end 33 years of public service her desire for the national parties to find middle ground to get things accomplished, saying she was frustrated by “‘MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY‘ ideologies“. Unfortunately, MANY PEOPLE have this “ideology”.
Sandy Maisel, “director of the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs at Colby College”, “It makes this seat ONE OF THE TOP Democratic targets in the country, from NOT being a Democratic target AT ALL“.
“in a statement”, Snowe said: “As I have long said, what motivates me is producing results for those who have entrusted me to be their voice and their champion and I am filled with that same sense of responsibility today (February 29, 2012) as I was on my first day in the Maine House of Representatives. I do find it FRUSTRATING, however, that an atmosphere of POLARIZATION and ‘MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY‘ ideologies has become pervasive in campaigns and in our governing institutions”. This is the latest expression of “frustration” and society HAS INDEED become increasingly “polarized” with “my way or the highway” mentalities.
“Discussing being one of a shrinking number of Republicans in the Senate in an April, 2009 interview with The Associated Press, Snowe declared, “IT’S NOT HEALTHY for the country to have parties with polar opposite views without that BRIDGE that you need to BUILD CONSENSUS“. THIS IS LEGIT. In 2008 of course, it WAS NOT easy being a Republican, as DEMOCRATS won 6 Senate seats in 2006 (because of FRUSTRATION with many of GEORGE W BUSH‘s policies) and 8 more seats in 2008 (on the back of President OBAMA’S landslide victory over Sen. MCCAIN).
“later that same month (April, 2009) when Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter defected to the Democratic party”, Snowe said: “Ultimately, we’re heading to having the smallest POLITICAL TENT in history, the way events have been unfolding. IF the Republican Party FULLY INTENDS to become a majority party in the future, it must move from THE FAR RIGHT back toward THE MIDDLE“, something which clearly HAS NOT happened, with TEA PARTIERS such as RAND PAUL coming to power in the Senate, along with many TEA PARTIERS in the House. Specter, of course, defected to INCREASE HIS CHANCES OF WINNING, but he lost in THE PRIMARY.
“Obama said her career shows what can be done when BOTH PARTIES WORK TOGETHER“. In a statement, the President said: “From her UNWAVERING SUPPORT FOR OUR TROOPS, to her efforts to reform Wall Street (a job which STILL ISN’T complete yet), to fighting for Maine’s SMALL BUSINESSES, Senator Snowe’s career demonstrates how much can be accomplished when leaders from both parties COME TOGETHER TO DO THE RIGHT THING for the American people”, which, again, is something that HAS NOT happened very often.
John Kerry, “She comes from a line of MODERATE Republicans from John Chafee to John HEINZ (whose wife would MARRY Kerry after Heinz’s death) that made really working across the aisle A VIRTUE“. IF ONLY MORE CAPITOL HILL POLITICIANS HAD THE SAME IDEA… “IT’S BEEN REALLY SAD to see that virtue DERIDED in so many Republican primaries the last couple years”. This trend is UNLIKELY to change anytime soon.
According to Sen. Scott Brown, “who is facing A FIERCE (?) re-election challenge“, “We are all going to miss her INDEPENDENCE and her ability to BUILD BRIDGES on some of the toughest issues“. “build bridges” is something that, let’s face it, NOT many people on Capitol Hill are willing to do these days. Also, notice “who is facing a fierce re-election battle”. HERE WE GO AGAIN.
Snowe went on: “To this day, I REMAIN DEEPLY PASSIONATE about public service and I CHERISH the opportunity (that) I have been given for nearly four decades to help improve the lives of my fellow Mainers”.
Finally, “(Former sen. George) Mitchell, who praised Snowe’s public service and friendship, joked that he was once advised NOT to overstay his welcome. “A guy from Maine (once) told me this: It’s better to LEAVE when we want you to STAY, rather than AFTER we want you to GO“. OK, with Snowe retiring, the million-dollar question now becomes: CAN DEMOCRATS STEAL THIS SEAT, that had been comfortably Republican since 1995 (when Snowe was first elected to the Senate)? This is also another senator who is TIRED OF THE GRIDLOCK, the other notable senator to express such a sentiment, of course, was former INDIANA Sen. EVAN BAYH when he retired in 2010 (Web-site/URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcjaDfij-P0).
