The title of a recently released Al-Jazeera article is “AID SHORTAGES and HUNGER grip Homs” (Web-site/URL: http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2012/02/201222718558600862.html).
“Syrian activists have reported the deaths of more than 125 people across the country, just hours after STATE television announced that an overwhelming majority of voters had said “yes” to a new constitution”. Again this is ” STATE television” so people HAD TO vote “yes” because THEY DIDN’T HAVE ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVES. BASHAR AL-ASSAD THE DICTATOR is still in power.
“In the beseiged city of Homs, at least 64 BODIES were reportedly recovered on Monday (February 27, 2012) in a rural area between the villages of Ram al-Enz and Ghajariyeh”. “bodies” is GRUESOME.
“Abou Baker, from the besieged Bab Amr neighbourhood, said the BODIES belonged to people who were kidnapped as they were trying to flee the area”. Of course, they DIDN’T make it as Assad’s forces OBLITERATED them. “Families leaving Bab Amr were stopped at a checkpoint last night (February 27, 2012) and 62 were KIDNAPPED” which implies VIOLENCE. “This morning (February 28, 2012), their BODIES were recovered in an area loyal to Assad”. Again, “bodies” is GRUESOME.
Omar Shakir, another activist, “Homs is literally DYING. ONLY one hospital in Waar neighbourhood remains functioning in the city. There is a SEVERE shortage of medicine and medical supplies”. To make matters worse, “ONLY two bakeries are STRUGGLING to provide Homs with bread. There are many HUNGRY people“.
According to State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, “We dismiss it [the referendum] as ABSOLUTELY CYNICAL” obviously, again because BASHAR AL-ASSAD is still in power and as long as Assad, a dictator is still in power, there can be NO REAL progress towards democracy.
Finally, “In another development on Monday (February 27, 2012), Qatar’s prime minister said he was IN FAVOR OF DELIVERING ARMS to the Syrian opposition that is battling government forces”. Speaking during an official visit to Norway, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al Thani said: “We should do whatever (is) necessary to help them (Syrian dissidents), including GIVING THEM WEAPONS TO DEFEND THEMSELVES“. This sounds like THE SECOND AMENDMENT of the Constitution. “This uprising in Syria now [has lasted] one year. For 10 months, it was peaceful: nobody was carrying weapons, nobody was doing anything. And Bashar CONTINUED KILLING THEM“. Could we have EXPECTED anything else? “So I think THEY’RE RIGHT to defend themselves by weapons and I think we should help these people BY ALL MEANS“. Again, this has to go through the UN Security Council where as we know, RUSSIA and CHINA are MAJOR hurdles/stumbling blocks because they are VERY eager to use their VETO powers.
So now, the problem in Syria is multi-faceted. In addition to a ruthless dictator killing people with absolutely no regard for human life/dignity, people are now STARVING TO DEATH. This is clearly a HUMANITARIAN DISASTER.
